Isle of Man government in Bid to Revive Declining UK Bee Colonies

In an extraordinary endeavour to save the honey bees, the Manx Government are going to post queen bees to the UK.To help boost the declining hive populations, queen bees will be mailed to the UK in ventilated envelopes.

Manx government bee disease officer and inspector, Harry Owens said: "Our bees are among the healthiest in the world and it would be nice to see if they could take over diseased colonies."
If successful, it is possible that the Isle of Man may export healthy bees as a commercial venture, he said.

For peat’s sake!! 

Hilary Ben is urging Garden Centres to make it clear if the compost they are selling contains peat.
Peat bogs are an important store of carbon emissions, but peat dug up in Britain for garden compost releases almost half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year – the equivalent of 100,000 cars on the road.

Soil Association Organic Award Winners 2010

 Winners of The Soil Association Organic Awards 2010 were announced on Sunday 11 April at the Natural and Organic Products Europe show in Olympia’s Pillar Hall.
  Now in its fifteenth year the awards ceremony showcases the very best businesses in the organic market. A judging panel made up of industry professionals picked the winners, with the shortlist for the Organic Retail category decided by a public vote. The Best New Organic Food Product was voted for by visitors to the show’s New Product Showcase throughout the day.

Unilever Cancels £20 million contract to prevent exposure by Greenpeace

Unilever, which produces many of Britain’s best-known household brands has been exposed as contributing to the destruction of rainforests by buying thousands of tonnes of illegal palm oil. Unilever, which uses palm oil in its Flora and Stork margarines, Dove toiletries and Persil washing powder among many other products, will today announce that it is cutting links with Sinar Mas, Indonesia’s largest palm oil company.Unilever is acting after being shown photographic evidence of Sinar Mas clearing rainforest in protected areas, including reserves for the country’s endangered orang-utan population.The Anglo-Dutch company, which claims to be a leader in protecting rainforests and chairs the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), was informed almost two years ago about Sinar Mas’s illegal activities.

Sir Roger Moore is campaigning to persuade Selfridges to discontinue sales of foie gras.

 The ad, which Sir Roger has paid for, is run by campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) and appeals to retailers to stop sales of the pate which is made using cruel methods to fatten goose livers. The poster has been placed directly outside Selfridges' Food Hall and shows him holding a protest sign, featuring the line: “Force-Feeding Birds Is Cruel, Not Yule”.
