Why has this taken so long?

Slaughterhouses could be forced to fit CCTV to prevent animal abuse, this is music to my ears.Defra ministers are considering making CCTV compulsory in slaughterhouses in England, Scotland and Wales to help enforce laws against animal cruelty. Let's hope it is more than just a consideration!

 

Polar explorer Mark Wood sets off for North-South Solo Expedition 8 November 2011.

Mark is attempting to become the first person in history to solo ski both the South and North Geographic Pole’s consecutively.Ten years in the making, Mark’s vision has become a reality. After flying out to Puerto Arenas, Chile, he will spend a week acclimatising before being dropped off at the edge of Antarctica on 16 November. He will then be left alone to trek the 680 miles to the South Pole. A little over a month later, he will be picked up and flown north, ready to start all over again and conquer the North Pole.

The RSPB is urging everyone to remember, remember wildlife on the 5th November.

As you gather logs for your bonfire, consider where you pile them so as not to give birds and other wildlife a nasty surprise.
Holding firework displays near to trees and bushes is also big a no-no.   During the hours of darkness many birds will be roosting in trees and bushes, so the RSPB is warning that holding firework displays and building bonfires too close to their shelters could disturb them.
Loud bangs and flashing lights close to where birds and other wildlife are sheltering could unsettle them and cause them to move on.  Every movement made in the cold weather uses up vital energy supplies, so unnecessary travel to find a quieter home could have a detrimental effect.
