Blossoms are everywhere and the bees don't need to look too far for their food. There is no doubt that honey is considered to be a superfood. With the decline of the honeybee and the bumblebee, we decided to highlight the huge benefit man takes from the production of honey that these little creatures create, their tireless work, and why it is so important to protect them. It's also picnic time, weather permitting why not take Dad on a surprise picnic party for Dad's Day. And take a look at the great ideas we have for you to treat him. We've got some solutions for dealing with the dreaded hay fever, and help with those aching joints that are often over worked during the summer months. For those of you who are contemplating marriage next year we hope the launch of our regular, mygreenwedding magazine will inspire you. You don't need to spend a fortune on a wedding to have a great time and remember, marriage is more important than the wedding! We have been promised a glorious summer this year by the weather forecasters, I wouldn't want to be in their shoes if we don't! But on a positive note, let's hope we have a `flaming June'. The classic designs are meticulously and traditionally made in England. Pricey, but exceptional. The Vanessa Arbuthnott Collection Fabrics, Wallpapers & Rugs Vanessa Arbuthnott's designs are evocative of the Cotswold countryside where she lives, and hugely influences the look of her fabrics. Her simple patterns reflect a basic and rustic way of living. Vanessa Arbuthnott initially trained as a nurse and a teacher before marrying Nicholas, an architect, and having four children. Together they converted a cow byre in the Cotswolds. Since they were unable to afford curtains Vanessa decided to create her own fabrics. She found screen printing and block printing liberating and enriching and, to her surprise, friends started using the designs in their own homes. Seven years on and her enthusiasm for designing fabric burns stronger than ever and she is hopeful that people continue to humour and fund her passion! The fabrics are produced in the UK and are printed on Linen Union and 100% cotton and some designs are available on oilcloth, wallpaper and floor rugs. They are moving towards using only organic cotton in order to protect the cotton pickers from harmful pesticides, and are constantly trying to find `greener' ways to run the business. There are seven designs in her collection: Meadow, Earth, Cockerel, Wildflower, Seaside, Garden, Woodland & Sky. "Gentle colours are my signature and include buttercup, limestone, clay, damson, duck egg, stone, raspberry, mushroom, cornflower, straw and lettuce. The fabrics are perfect for loose covers for chairs and sofas, upholstery, curtains and blinds, bed heads, valances, cushions and tablecloths. The collections complement each other by sharing colours and include useful coordinates such as checks, stripes, spots, and floral prints". "We are also trying to use recycled stationery wherever possible and our fabric scraps will now be recycled by the charity Scope who will sell it for insulation". Apis, is the Latin name for bees. The Romans used honey instead of gold to pay their taxes. Bees' wings beat 11,400 times per minute Bees can fly for up to six miles, although one or two is more common. The waggle dance is performed by the bee to show it's hive where the nectar source is. Royal jelly is the magical food which turns an ordinary worker bee into a queen. Honey is a totally natural product, with absolutely nothing added. The bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man. n n n n BeeWyched is a fragrant honey beer, brewed using Chilean Fairtrade honey, fairtrade sugars, pale ale malts and English Challenger hops. "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man." Albert Einstein I don't know if Einstein actually said this, but I hope we never get to put this calculation to the test! Manuka Gold As well as honey these clever little insects are also responsible for making Propolis the ingredient bees use to protect their hives. Legend has it that the Egyptians used Propolis, honey and other resins to mummify their pharaohs preserving them, as far as possible, for the next life! As well as producing a purely functional role in sealing and reinforcing the hive, Propolis also performs the role of immune system for the hive keeping it sterile and free of microbial invaders. Being made up of waxes, resins, fatty acids and even amino acids, Aristotle reputedly coined the name Propolis meaning "defender of the city". And it's because of Propolis that it is assumed bees are the only living organism that are absolutely bacteria free amazing! Propolis has antioxidant properties as it is rich in flavonoids powerful, freeradical scavengers. When free radicals are in excess they can be problematic to our health so antioxidants play a major part in our body's health. Manuka Gold offers a wide range, Active UMF® 10+ rated manuka honey and manuka honey products also containing propolis. www.manukabuzz.co.uk/ New Zealand Honey Shop manuka honey The most important point to make is that not all manuka honey is the same. It is a function of being a natural product, that it naturally occurs in different levels of potency. All honey contains an enzyme that generates hydrogen peroxide, a known antiseptic. How much there is in each type of honey can vary widely. Researchers have discovered that some batches of manuka honey, as well as having an `active' activity through the hydrogen peroxide effect, also contained an additional antiseptic / antibacterial ability now known as UMF (an acronym for Unique Manuka Factor). This other component only found in some batches of manuka honey is much more stable and can continue to provide an antibacterial activity in a wide range of conditions. Only some batches of manuka honey contain this UMF factor. It has been shown that manuka honey containing sufficient levels UMF is very good in its healing ability, in particular in wound care, including burns and leg ulcers. Specialist medical UMF manuka honey products are now available, and are being used in some hospitals, particularly in New Zealand and Australia. The term UMF® is now a registered trademark of the Active Manuka Honey Association of New Zealand. This is an industry body, and they act as `guardian' for the quality of manuka honey, giving a rating number eg UMF10+, UMF20+ etc that indicates the strength or potency of the nonperoxide antibacterial activity. Using local honey from the area you live is considered to be effective in helping hay fever sufferers because it is made with the local varieties of pollen that cause the allergy. Local honey will contain small amounts of this pollen too, from the same grasses / trees in that geographical area. This unusuallooking crop is a member of the cabbage family and is also known as `turniprooted cabbage'. It is a quick growing green veg which has a swollen stem base with leaves growing from bracts around the middle and a tuft on top. The leaves are discarded in the kitchen and the bulbous part eaten. It is delicious steamed, sauted or eaten raw either grated or cut into thin slices. I plump for the Purple Vienna variety and sow seeds thinly in a drill just 1½ cm deep. Shallow sowing is important, to allow the stem bases room to swell. If you have room for sowing more than one row then space them 25cm apart. As the seedlings grow and develop true leaves, gradually remove the smallest and weakest specimens to finally allow 12cm between plants. Larger spacings can produce bigger crops but kohl rabi is at its best when the bulbs are not much bigger than a golf ball. It copes with dry conditions better than most veg although I'd advise sparing them whatever water you can because this makes them all the more tender. Based on the book by former Telegraph journalist Charles Clover, The End of the Line provides a dramatic expose of those in power who are taking advantage of the seas with catastrophic consequences on the world's fish supplies. In The End of the Line, we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food. The film examines the imminent extinction of blue fin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish. Released in the UK around World Ocean day The End of the Line shows that we can all enjoy fish, but encourages viewers to think more carefully about where their fish is coming from. mydad'sday Osmium for men Daddy & Me, the perfect gift for Father's Day. This year Recycle Week will encourage people to `try something new' in an effort to go greener and cut back on the waste we all produce. When we think about recycling we tend to think about empty bottles and cans, old newspapers and cardboard. Well this is `something new' and glamorous and a great way to cut back on waste. Reduce, Reuse, ReJewel! Foxy launches a costume jewellery recycling program! Foxy Originals has launched a jewellery recycling program in North America. With Foxy's innovative program customers can stay in style while reducing waste and helping the environment. Simply, customers can send in their wellloved pieces and receive a 10% discount on their next Foxy purchase. Metals from returned pieces are melted down and turned into new jewels. All we need is for an entrepenaur to take up this idea in the UK. What is it? Well basically, it's a party in your street, in everyone's street. On 19th July the Eden Project is asking the people of Britain to stop what they're doing and sit down to lunch together. Why? Well for lots of reasons really but mainly to put a smile back on Britain's face. Imagine a summer's day on which millions, throughout the UK, sit down to have lunch together, with their neighbours in the middle of their streets, around tower blocks and on every patch of common ground. The food, entertainment and decorations will have been grown, cooked, or created you. This will be a day to break bread with your neighbours. Inspiration for The Big Lunch came from members of the Eden Project in Cornwall.
